ESG Statistics For The Fortune 100

According to primary research that we conduct each month at Buildremote, here are the main takeaways of our study of the Fortune 100’s ESG policies:

  • ESG department status
    • 100% of the Fortune 100 have active DEI departments
    • (We also looked for canceled policies, no policy, and policies that weren’t publicly shared)
  • Progress toward goals
    • 66% of the Fortune 100 claim to be on track toward their ESG goals
    • 2% claim to have already missed their goals
    • 5% have reached (succeeded) in their goals
  • Most recent report year
    • 3% of the Fortune 100 haven’t released an ESG annual report since 2022
    • 61% released a 2023 ESG annual report (but not 2024)
    • 26% released a 2024 ESG annual report
  • Companies with SBTi targets (Science Based Targets initiative)
    • 44% of the Fortune 100 have validated SBTi targets
    • 52% of the Fortune 100 do not have validated SBTi targets
    • 4% of the Fortune 100 had validated SBTi targets, but no longer do

ESG Policy Definitions & Descriptions

In our paid report, we track 16 different pieces of ESG data. Here are definitions for the non-obvious ones.

Department Status

  • Active: The company’s ESG policy is current and webpage is active.
  • Cancelled: The company dismantled its ESG department and deleted its webpage.
  • No Policy: The company either does not have an ESG policy or does not publicly post one.

Progress Towards Goals

  • On Track: The company’s progress is moving forward as planned and within the set timeline.
  • Missing Progress: The company is advancing, but at a slower pace than expected.
  • Succeeding: The company has fully achieved its stated goals within the set year.
  • Lagging: The company is significantly behind schedule in achieving its goals.
  • Unavailable: The company has not publicly disclosed any progress on its goals.

Recent ESG Report (Year)

  • The year of the most recent ESG report the company has publicly released.

ESG Main Focus Areas

  • As self-reported, the priority areas within the company’s ESG plan (e.g., climate, DEI, waste reduction).

Net-Zero Commitments

  • A pledge to reduce (and/or offset) greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero. Some companies commit to net-zero only for specific emissions scopes, or they might use alternative terms such as “carbon neutrality.”

Net-Zero Baseline Year

  • The historical year used as the starting point to measure greenhouse gas emissions for net-zero targets.

Carbon Reduction Targets (Scope 1 and 2)

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating, or cooling.

Carbon Reduction Targets (Scope 3)

  • Emissions not directly owned or controlled by the reporting organization but occurring in its value chain (e.g., upstream, downstream, supply chain, shipping, consumer use).

Waste Reduction Goals

  • A target for reducing total waste or diverting waste from landfills, often defined by a percentage or date.

Renewable Energy Goals

  • Targets for transitioning to electricity sourced from renewables like solar or wind. Example: “By 2025, 50% of our electricity will come from solar or wind.”

SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) Targets

Validates corporate emissions targets for alignment with the Paris Agreement:

  • Yes: Targets are validated.
  • No: Targets are not validated.
  • Removed: Targets are no longer validated (but were previously validated).
