Instructions For The Commute Cost Calculator

Follow these steps to calculate your commute cost:

  1. Round-trip miles per day: Enter the total miles you drive to and from the office on a typical workday. If you’re not sure, use Google Maps to check your one-way distance and double it.
  2. Office days per week: Enter how many days per week you commute. For a full-time return to office, this is typically 5. For hybrid workers, enter 2, 3, or whatever your schedule requires.
  3. Gas price: Enter the current price of gas per gallon in your area. The default is $4.00. If you don’t know, look it up on Gas Buddy.
  4. Fuel efficiency: Enter your car’s miles per gallon (MPG). Check your owner’s manual or look up your vehicle on fueleconomy.gov if you’re not sure. The default is 28 MPG.
  5. Parking & tolls (optional): Click “Add parking & tolls” to include any daily parking fees or tolls you pay on your commute.
  6. Vehicle wear & tear (optional): Check this box to include depreciation, maintenance, and tire costs based on the 2026 IRS standard mileage rate of $0.725 per mile. This gives you a more complete picture of the true cost of driving.

How To Calculate Commute Cost (Formula)

Manually Calculate Your Commute Cost

To calculate your own commute cost without the calculator above, follow this formula:

Step 1 — Gas cost per day: (Round-trip miles ÷ MPG) × Gas price per gallon

Step 2 — Total cost per day: Gas cost per day + Parking + Tolls + Wear & tear (miles × $0.725)

Step 3 — Annual cost: Cost per day × Office days per week × 50 weeks

Example: 30-mile round trip, 3 days per week, $4.00 gas, 28 MPG, no parking or tolls

  • Gas per day: (30 ÷ 28) × $4.00 = $4.29
  • Cost per day: $4.29
  • Annual cost: $4.29 × 3 × 50 = $643/year
  • Add wear & tear ($0.725 × 30 miles = $21.75/day), and that jumps to $3,906/year.
