How We Determine The Best Tech Companies To Work For

Buildremote’s Award Criteria

There are three pieces of information that make up our grading criteria:

1. “Tech” company status: If a company in our database can answer any of the following questions with a “yes” then we considered it a tech company:
   1. Is the company’s primary product or service digital in nature? (ie. Google)
   2. Is the company’s main way of delivering the product or service through a digital platform? (ie. Uber)
   3. Is the main disruption the company introduced to the market digital technology? (ie. Amazon)
2. Company size: We looked up the number of employees in 2023 at each company first on the company website, then on LinkedIn (if not available on the site). Each company was put into one of these brackets:
   1. Small: 1 – 100 employees
   2. Medium: 101 – 1,000 employees
   3. Large: 1,000+ employees
      1. If companies were in the same size bracket and offered the same number of benefits, we broke the tie by the number of employees (most to least). We used number of employees as a proxy for open positions (it’s not exact) to show companies likely hiring more toward the top of the rankings if all else was equal.
3. Company benefits: We track which employee benefits each company offers of our 20 most desirable (see below)
   1. To quality as a best tech company to work for, you must offer 14 or more of the 20 (which puts the company in the top 1% of our database)
   2. Companies that offer the most of the 20 benefits rank the highest

Based on our research, we landed on the following 20 employee benefits as the most in-demand today:

1. Remote work: These companies consider themselves remote-friendly, remote-first, or fully remote. 
2. 🧳 Company retreats: These companies have committed to regular in-person meetups.
3. ✈️ Work from anywhere: The company has a program in place that allows employees to perform their jobs outside of the office, the home, and outside their home state or country.
4. Four-day work week: These companies typically work Monday – Thursday (with Fridays off).
5. Asynchronous work: Colleagues work on their own schedule (not necessarily at the same time).
6. 🗓️ Flexible schedule: Employees at these companies are empowered to pick their own start times, end times, and when hours are logged throughout the day.
7. Paid sabbaticals: Employees can take an extended break from work without using vacation days and while retaining their salary.
8. Unlimited PTO: Employees can request off as many vacation days as they choose without a cap. 
9. 🏥 Health insurance: These companies provide healthcare coverage to their employees (and potentially dependents, too).
10. 🚑 Flexible spending account (FSA): These companies offer a special account funded with pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible out-of-pocket health care costs not covered by an insurance plan.
11. 🍼 Maternity leave: These companies offer paid leave for mothers after the birth of a child.
12. 🍼 Paternity leave: These companies offer paid leave for fathers after birth of a child.
13. 🪥 Dental insurance: These companies provide dental health coverage to their employees (and potentially dependents, too).
14. ⚰️ Life insurance: These companies provide or subsidize life insurance coverage (a death benefit to the insured’s beneficiary) to their employees.
15. 💪🏽 Gym or wellness reimbursement: These companies provide a one-time or recurring amount of money to pay for gym memberships, workout equipment, exercise classes, etc.
16. 💰 401K match plan: Companies on this list contribute a certain amount of money to an employee’s 401k retirement plan if the employee contributes themselves.
17. 💵 Employee stock purchase program (ESPP): These companies allow employees to purchase company shares, often at a discounted price, as part of their benefits package.
18. 💻 Work stipends: These companies provide a one-time or recurring amount of money to be used for a home office, coworking membership, or travel (for the digital nomads).
19. 📚 Learning & development budget: These companies offer a reimbursement program dedicated to covering employees’ costs for professional development activities, such as courses, books, certifications, or conferences.
20. 🎓 Tuition reimbursement: These companies offer to pay – partially or in full – for its employees to pursue a higher education degree.
