JPMorganChase RTO backlash

On January 7, JPMorgan Chase mandated a full return to the office, requiring all employees onsite five days per week starting in March.

Here are five challenges the bank has faced since announcing the new RTO mandate.

 

Jan 8: Employees launch a petition on Change.org

“As a dedicated employee of J.P. Morgan, I find it increasingly challenging to reconcile the company’s decision to enforce a return to a full five-day office presence.”

Jan 11: The bank shut down an internal messaging board

“The bank shut down comments on an internal webpage announcing the bank’s return-to-office policy after dozens of them criticized the move.”

Jan 12: Workers reach out to CWA about forming a union

“About a dozen JPMorgan Chase employees, representing groups from different areas of the bank all over the U.S., have contacted the union.”

Jan 31: The bank doesn’t have enough office space for everyone

“These locations were listed as ‘not yet determined’ (available):

  • Two JPMorgan buildings in Plano, Texas
  • One location in Greenwood Village, Colorado
  • Its Polaris Parkway regional headquarters (Ohio)”

Feb 10: Employees launch a petition on Coworker.org

“We urge JPMC to retain (or return to) the flexible hybrid-working model for roles that have already used it – regardless of rank.” (Coworker.org)

  • Notes:
    • The policy was leaked on January 7, 2025 (potentially before being shared with employees)
    • The bank followed up later saying it would give employees 30 days’ notice before their RTO policy kicks in

  • Office Space Footprint: Decreasing
