Gap Orders 5-Day Office Return Starting September
Gap Inc. is the latest major corporation to announce a full return-to-office (RTO) mandate. San Francisco Business Times first reported the story on February 7, 2025. The order applies to all corporate employees who live near an office and will start in September 2025.
Here’s everything you need to know about Gap’s RTO policy.
Gap’s Return To Office Policy [Jan 2025]
- Notice Date: February 7, 2025
- Return To Office Date: September 1, 2025
- Location Policy: Office First
- Office Visit Expectations: 5 days per week in the office
- Clauses:
- Applies across all Gap brands including Old Navy, Athleta and Banana Republic
- Applies to all corporate employees near Gap offices
- The return started in February of 2025 and will ramp up before September
- Previous Policy: Hybrid (March 2022)
Gap pledged to return to the office in March of 2022 as a way to revitalize San Francisco.
But in this most recent policy change, a Gap spokesperson said, “In an effort to foster an even stronger community across Gap Inc., beginning in February, employees located near an office have begun coming in more frequently.”
Therefore, it’s safe to assume that corporate Gap employees mostly ignored the previous RTO policy from 2022.
Now, Gap hopes to ramp up toward five days in the office by the fall. It will be interesting to see what happens if people don’t voluntarily come in more from now until September. How will that impact the enforcement of the September policy?
